India Steps Into the 6G Race With the US and 24 Nations: Why the Next Generation of Connectivity Matters

Every generation of mobile communication has changed more than the speed at which a person can download a film or open a webpage. 2G helped mobile phones become instruments of everyday communication. 3G made mobile internet practical. 4G transformed the smartphone into a pocket-sized window to the digital world, while 5G began connecting machines, factories, vehicles and other systems with much greater speed and lower latency. It is also about who will help write the rules, define technical standards, develop intellectual property, manufacture critical equipment and control the technologies that other countries may eventually depend upon. In such a race, arriving early at the table can matter as much as possessing a large market when the technology finally arrives.
India Wants to Be More Than a Consumer of 6G
For many years, India's position in the global telecommunications story was largely shaped by the size of its consumer market. India had hundreds of millions of mobile users and an enormous appetite for affordable data, but much of the underlying technology came from companies and research ecosystems outside the country. New Delhi wants Indian researchers, companies, universities and start-ups to participate in the creation of the technology itself rather than simply wait for finished equipment and standards to arrive from abroad.
That ambition is reflected in the Bharat 6G Mission and the Bharat 6G Alliance. The government said in July that the Bharat 6G Alliance had expanded to 90 members, bringing together telecom operators, equipment manufacturers, start-ups, research institutions, universities and other stakeholders. The China Question Cannot Be Ignored
No serious discussion of the 6G race can completely avoid the wider technological competition between the United States and China. The struggle over 5G demonstrated how telecommunications equipment can become intertwined with questions of national security, supply chains and geopolitical influence. The next generation is likely to be even more complicated because 6G is expected to bring together artificial intelligence, advanced computing, robotics, sensing and satellite networks.
India is therefore entering a field where technology and geopolitics will often walk side by side.
Yet India's objective should not simply be to choose one technological camp against another. Its greater opportunity lies in developing enough domestic capability to negotiate with strength. A country that possesses its own researchers, intellectual property, standards expertise, manufacturing capacity and trusted companies has greater freedom to cooperate with different partners without becoming excessively dependent on any single external supplier.
That is the deeper meaning of technological self-reliance. It does not necessarily mean producing everything alone. In a modern economy, no major country produces every component of an advanced technology entirely within its borders. Self-reliance means possessing enough knowledge, capability and industrial depth to avoid becoming helpless when international circumstances change.
What Could 6G Actually Bring to Ordinary People?
For an ordinary smartphone user, the first question may be simple: What will 6G actually do for me?
The answer is not merely “faster internet”.
The real transformation could occur in areas that most people do not yet associate with mobile networks. A future 6G system could allow machines to communicate with extremely low delays, enable more advanced immersive experiences, support intelligent transportation systems, improve remote industrial operations and help connect devices in places where conventional terrestrial networks are difficult to build. Researchers are also examining the integration of communication and sensing, meaning future networks could potentially do more than carry information; they could help detect and understand objects, movements and environments. Artificial intelligence is likely to become deeply embedded in these networks. Instead of networks merely carrying information from one device to another, AI could help networks understand demand, distribute resources, detect problems and optimise performance automatically. Satellite connectivity may also become a much more important part of the picture. Remote villages, oceans, disaster zones, aircraft and other difficult-to-connect environments could benefit from systems that combine terrestrial towers with satellites and other non-terrestrial networks. This is particularly relevant for a country such as India, where geography stretches from crowded megacities to mountains, forests, islands and remote rural communities.
India Has a Long Road Ahead
But ambition should not be mistaken for achievement.
India's entry into the international 6G initiative is an important step, but membership in a global technology partnership does not automatically create world-class technology. The harder work happens afterwards—in laboratories, universities, factories, start-ups and standards organisations.
India will need sustained research funding. It will need highly skilled engineers and scientists. It will need stronger links between universities and industry. It will need companies capable of converting research papers and patents into commercially useful products. It will need semiconductor and component ecosystems that can support advanced telecom equipment. And it will need to ensure that intellectual property created with Indian public or private investment does not remain trapped inside laboratories without reaching the market.

This is perhaps the most important part of the story. A nation cannot become a technological power merely by announcing a mission. A mission becomes meaningful only when young researchers receive opportunities, companies receive room to experiment, universities produce original ideas and factories have the capacity to turn those ideas into products.
The Real Battle Will Be for Talent
Behind every new generation of communication technology lies something more valuable than towers, antennas or fibre-optic cables: human knowledge.
The countries that succeed in 6G will require scientists who understand radio systems, computer architecture, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, photonics, semiconductor engineering, satellite communications and advanced mathematics. They will require entrepreneurs who can turn discoveries into companies. They will require policymakers who understand technology well enough to write sensible regulations. And they will require international negotiators who can defend national interests in the rooms where global standards are decided.
India has an enormous advantage here in the form of its young population and large technology workforce. But population alone is not talent. Talent must be educated, trained and given the opportunity to create.
This is where India's 6G programme could become something larger than a telecommunications project. If handled well, it could encourage a generation of students to see telecommunications research, semiconductor engineering, AI, robotics and advanced computing not merely as subjects to study but as fields in which India can create something the rest of the world will use.
6G Will Also Raise Difficult Questions
Every technological revolution carries two faces. One promises opportunity; the other brings responsibility.
A more connected world also creates a larger digital surface that can be attacked. As networks become more dependent on artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, connected machines and satellites, cybersecurity will become even more important. Privacy will become harder to protect if networks can sense more about the physical environment. The expansion of connected devices could also increase the consequences of a major network failure.

If the technology becomes available only in wealthy cities and expensive devices, it could deepen the digital divide rather than close it. India's experience with affordable mobile data offers an important lesson. Technology becomes truly transformative when it reaches ordinary people, not merely when it becomes technically impressive.
The future Indian 6G network therefore has to be not only fast, but affordable. Not only intelligent, but secure. Not only advanced, but accessible.
From Bharat 6G to a Global Indian Technology Story
India's decision to join the US and 24 other countries comes at a time when the global technology order is being rearranged. Artificial intelligence is changing industries. Semiconductor supply chains are being reorganised. Countries are reconsidering dependence on foreign technology. Data centres are expanding rapidly. Satellites are becoming part of mainstream connectivity. In such a world, telecommunications is no longer just an industry; it is part of the foundation on which modern economies and national security systems are built.
India has an opportunity that did not exist to the same extent during earlier generations of mobile technology. It has a massive domestic market, a large pool of engineers, a growing start-up ecosystem, experience in building digital public infrastructure and an increasingly ambitious technology policy.
But opportunity is not destiny.
The country will have to move from being a large market for other nations' technologies to becoming a creator of technologies that other nations want to buy. It will have to move from importing finished systems to developing deeper capabilities in components, software, intellectual property and manufacturing. And it will have to turn the phrase “Bharat 6G” from a government programme into an ecosystem in which universities, entrepreneurs, engineers, manufacturers and ordinary citizens can all find a place.
The Race Has Already Begun
The first 6G phone may still be years away. The towers that will carry those signals may not yet exist in their final commercial form. The standards are still evolving, and much of the technology remains under research and testing.
But the race itself has already begun.
Countries are deciding who will write standards. Companies are investing in research. Governments are forming alliances. Universities are building laboratories. Engineers are experimenting with technologies that may eventually become invisible parts of everyday life.
India's entry into the international 6G initiative is therefore not the arrival of the future. It is India's decision to take part in building that future.
And perhaps that is the most important distinction.
In the age of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G, India largely learned to use the technologies that the world had already developed. With 6G, New Delhi is attempting something more ambitious: to have a hand in deciding what the technology becomes.
Whether India succeeds will not be decided by a single agreement, a single mission or a single government announcement. It will be decided slowly—in laboratories where researchers work late into the night, in universities where students learn the mathematics of tomorrow's networks, in factories where advanced components are manufactured, in start-ups where difficult ideas are turned into products, and in international meeting rooms where the technical rules of the next decade are quietly written.
